A while ago there was a great discussion about black canvasses....something I've never tried. So I became really enthusiastic and have covered a large ish canvass with black, and........nothing. Inspiration has vanished. I like horses or dogs best, or maybe a big cat. Should I keep it minimalist with just a few hints or use the black background to make the subject stand out. I'll just sit and look at it for now.

Sue.............. when you are faced with the blank moments of life........ let them be.
And one day, it will just 'hit' you........ the inspiration I mean lol.
Paint something else while you are waiting.

Hi SueO, I use black canvases a lot, but when I do use them I always have a painting to mind, I think black canvases are great to paint on,but they can be a bit off putting, I use the starkness of the canvas to make the subject stand out as in my floral paintings, hope the inspiration will hit you soon Pat

I've decided on a galloping horse, minimalist. If that goes horribly wrong I can either make it more realistic or cover it with black again. Art club tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

I'm not that happy with it. Should I leave it ...or turn it into a 'proper' picture????

Well,I think it's a nice value reversal...it is a good exercise . I did this with students , white chalk on Black paper...makes one look at darks, and not put them in, letting paper do it for you.

I teach Sue, so I will put my teacher`s hat on, what is it, that you dislike about your painting because I do not like it is not specific enough. When you can answer this question often we you will find the solution.

Personnaly I think and again just an opinion, if you would have used a different color beside white for the painting it would have been different. White is limiting, the painting is too neutral but hey.....I love bright colors lol. But what matters the most is what is your opinion.

Hi Sue, I would tend to agree. with Michelle, it's a great start, use this as a sketch, and start adding colour, the movement of the horse is wonderfull, don't loose that!! Glad my discussion got you trying something new anyway.

The only thing I can see is maybe the front legs are a little short. Other than that I think it's great.xxx

Hi Sue, I agree with Harry13,the front legs seem a little short but otherwise its lovely. I often use a black canvas,if you look on my page you will see a couple of mine.....dont give up on it as you can paint some beautiful paintings on black.Regards Maureen
