You haven't overdone the shadows on the boats at all. Look closely at other shadows, both cast shadows and form shadows, on other elements in the scene. One thing I see is that the sky seems to be the same color throughout. It will gain depth if ...

Great texture on the trees in the grove, and your Matterhorn came out magnificent with good grasp of values all the way through. Excellent.

Here's an example I did of smooth halftones, not using little circles but short 1/8" or so strokes at a slight angle. It doesn't mater as long as they're short, soft, don't overlap and gently produce a light area. I started with a shading bar fr...

I've gotten smooth textures in light colors or dark by several means. Small circular strokes is one, but I have also succeeded in doing it with short irregular feathered linear strokes. The real key to it is to go very lightly and cover your area...

Really good! I loved this one, it's the first one I did and it came out so well! You really got the values right.

This is beautiful. A little stylized, very elegant, beautiful proportions and composition.

I've got the Derwent Artist, which have the same core material -- they are very good ones but they are not as easily blended as the Derwent Coloursoft. They're brilliant for techniques that leave some of the white paper showing. Color mixing with ...

The grisaille is looking good. So is the first stage of color, you'll need a lot of layering on this one to bring it to full brilliance. Grisaille technique is one of those slow powerful ones.

Waiting for the art to come up. Lori, if you look when you're uploading for "Thumbnail" and "Pop-Up" options (you have to click options) then it's a lot easier to see what you posted and I don't navigate away to comment on it.

Interesting. THis one looks almost liquid, beautiful rendering of an interesting concept.

Great article, Fran! Excellent WIP too. I love doing the eyes last, that eerie look was so perfect in one portrait that I wound up regretting it when I put his eyes in. With the blank white-marble eyes he looked like a Greek statue of tragedy and ...

How long have you been drawing or painting?
More than 3 years
Tell us a bit about yourself:
"Other" includes Coloured Pencils and Oil Pastels among many, many, many others. There ought to have been an option for "all of the above and then some!"

I also own and maintain an Oil Pastels website, Explore-Oil-Pastels-With-Robert-Sloan.com -- search on that and you will definitely find it. Big site with 75 pages or so, but no forums like this one.

I have been doing art all my life, was professional in the 1990s and now disabled completely, have been doing more writing about art and teaching online.

One of the wonderful things about Bob Davies and his Watercolour Secrets videos is that even if you are already pretty much of an expert -- they are inspiring and for someone self taught, they can fill in gaps you didn't know you had. Watercolour wasn't my strongest medium. I've spent years trying to master it and those videos helped me understand it a lot better in its own right. Some things like travel sketching are coming clearer to me than they ever have.

Oh yes. I tend to write rather long posts on everything from introductions to posts -- it's an occupational hazard for a novelist. Someday I expect to earn enough from online and offline writing to quit my day job as a cripple -- even though I'll get it again just for age in a couple of decades, it'll be nice to do that and be self supporting again.

My science fiction novel, Raven Dance, is available at iUniverse.com and is a big fat epic with plenty of action, social satire, intricate plotting and immesvie backstory. If you like visiting the weirder places in the literary universe you'll probably enjoy it.

Hey Robert,
Thanks so much for the nice comment and the advice on my picture of Mary Mary. That's the first time I had used the Coloursoft pencils and I really like them. Looks like I just can't get away from Derwent.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Fran

Thank you both! I was just fooling around flipping through my watercolor journal where I keep all my color charts and noticed the strong resemblance -- Quinacridone Burnt Orange is so useful a color! Also you can get that and Quinacridone Red and Ultramarine in Da Vinci watercolors free if you subscribe to Watercolor Artist, which I did, can never have too much Ultramarine!

Thanks Fran! I'm off to post -- just did a great CP piece this afternoon and feeling insufferably proud of myself for it. Colored pencils are my first love medium, I always come back to them sooner or later.
