i am a people person, however enjoy my alone time also. i live in a wonderful community with many opportunitiesto be around fellow artist . Every Fri. morning i meet at a center to paint .! . After marriage and children now is my time. I did paint on and off through the years. But now I can pretty much dictate how much time I spend on my art. I find the more I paint the more it consumes me.

Hi Rita, I think I'm just allergic to the raw sap. Anything made from cedar I seem to do okay with.

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, I do paint out doors (plein air) as frequently as I can, but I also take photos and work from there. Travel to the mountains (I live on the prairies) is costly and spending time painting there is a pure luxury that I sometimes cannot justify. I paint out doors as frequently as I can, but between the -40 deg C winters and the thriving mosquitos season that we enjoy here in northern Alberta I would say that I paint quite frequently indoors from photos. I do NOT copy the photos exactly. Instead I extract information as references....for instance the photos will answer questions like:
What do wild rose leave look like? How many points? what's their correct colouring, intensity, shape. How ae they attached to the stems? What did that mountain peak look like? What was the hue and intensity of that mountain stream? cont'd

Or How many toes did that pig have? How were their wings attached? Or How many vanes did that fish have on its propellers??? LOL I think you get the idea. I never copy a photo exactly as taken! Reason? Because cameras DO lie! They lie about values, hues and depth of field and are notoriously bad at reporting stuff in areas of low contrast. They sometimes lie about perspective, too....depending on your settings, lens and camera quality. They also don't tell you anything about the atmosphere that YOU experienced while there, BUT it will REMIND you of the experience there, and THAT is what you are supposed to, as an artist, convey...that mood you felt. Not transference of an image to other 2D visual media. For that all you have to do is snap a picture. You will get good results in full detail. Some pictures are very pleasing to look at, but the aim of the ARTIST should be to convey that mood, feeling the sensibilities of the place. Not be a mere reporter.

Yes, I agree with your friend. Good for her. But, having said that I will encourage you to continue taking PHOTOS FOR REFERENCE ONLY NOT TO COPY BLINDLY....OK OK, sometimes it IS very hard to remember just exactly HOW those darned wings were attached to those pesky little pigs! LOL
Have a great day!

Your comment on my "QS 120110" made my day. Thank you Rita. My sketching on newsprint started accidentally many years ago. I do the crossword regularly and end up sketching something on the newpaper when I get stuck with the crossword. It was my wife who commented that it was a pity I was throwing out the sketches with the old newspapers. So I started scanning and saving some of the better ones.

I haven't visited your page for a long time, and I am delighted to see that your very colourful and interesting daily journal is continuing. I think it is a wonderful idea.

Thanks Rita, for your kind comment on my Cows picture. I agree with you on the composition. I think it is more of a study than a complete painting. Take care, Elise.
