How long have you been drawing or painting?
I'm returning to art after a long lay off
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I'M 66 AND HAVE BEEN PAINTING FOR YEARS. JUST STARTED BACK AFTER MANY YEARS NOT PAINTING. I'M A IMPRESSION PAINTER AND LOVE WHAT I CAN FIND IN NATURE.
AT ONE TIME I HAD A FEW BUCKS IN MY POCKET AFTER SELLING MY COMPANY AND I DECIDED TO TRAVEL THE USA FOR ONE YEAR . OUT OF THAT YEAR I MIGHT HAVE SPENT 3 NIGHTS IN A MOTEL THE REST OF THE TIME I SEVERIAL CAMPED TO TEST SOME OF MY SKILLS.... I COULD NEVER GET LOST BECAUSE IF THE SUN GOT IN MY EYES I TURNED EATHER NORTH OR SOUTH... BUT I DID MISS OUT ON THE WELL KNOWN TOURIEST VISTAS TRAVELING THE BACK ROADS AND BACK PACKING UP INTO THE HIGH COUNTRY AFFORDED ME VISTAS THAT I COULDN'T SEE ANYWHERE ELSE.....I'M A ADVID KAYAKER AND HAVE BEEN IN MOST OF THE LARGE RIVERS IN THE USA AND ALL SURROUNDING OCEANS........ THE THINGS THAT HAVE PASSED BEFORE MY EYES IS AMAZING. SO BEFORE I LAY DOWN FOR THAT LONG DIRT DAP I HAVE MANY THINGS TO PAINT... I DON'T MEASURE SUCCESS BY HOW MUCH OR HOW MANY YOU SELL... I DID THAT BEFORE AND ALL THOSE PAINTINGS ARE GONE FOREVER . I WANT THEM AROUND ME FOR A COUPLE OF REASONS . TO SEE WHAT I CAN CHANGE IN THE NEXT PAINTING FOR THE BETTER AND TO LEAVE MY CHILDREN A PART OF THERE DAD AFTER I'M GONE...... RON

http://www.mckinleystudio.com/paintings.html Look at his Paintings - Oils - Recent and Archives. That is it I think......that is how I want to paint. Color and light.
http://www.ccpvideos.com/page/CCP/PROD/22-RM1d try to click on the top to see the video. He has a "middle cool gray" and talks about "temperature" and his neutral was dark. The clip was only for a short time so watch when they show you his palette. You do anything similar to that?

Where have I been? Trying to stay off of the computer and out of the gallery as much a possible. I want to have time to study and paint. On the bridge painting you did for your wife, you came to me and specifically ask me to really look and comment. So after the usual - great - comment, I went back and tried to look and give an honest opinion. Later I read a comment on that page where someone did not understand the situation and sort of shot me down for my comment. It just took the fun, so to speak, out of commenting honestly. That is another reason I do not comment much, and usually only on to people who I already know and they know me. I speak truth to the best of my ability with a heart of a teacher who is mostly interested in helping others grow and get better. I just have to say "What ever." and go on. I for sure do not pretend to know everything, but some things I do, and I share. Ro

I am also having trouble loosening up. I want to paint more like you do and some of the old masters using color with hardly any foreground detail. Even with the palette knife on most of the dunes. I realized that I put "palette knife" on the dunes painting, but I did use a brush on the edges of the dunes, just forgot to put that on the comments. It is as though I can not remember how to paint with a brush! How dumb is that. I started that dune painting with a brush and the sky was UGH. I grabbed the knife and it just flowed in so easily. Perhaps, I should just keep developing my skills with the knife. The paintings sure go faster. So much undecision. My desire is to learn enough about color that I can paint plien air (you keep telling me to do this), but I think I need to be settled on my colors before I attempt the hardships of on location. Just my thoughts. I do have all those pieces of paper to look back on with the mixes for all my paingings. and I am getting quite a collection......I just know that they will pay off. (all the work)

Hey.........I have discovered a wonderful thing to keep paints in between sessions. I scrap up the left overs with the knife, and then scrape the color into & on the edge of a Carmex jar. All around the edge. Now, fill it with water& put the lid back on. The paint will keep for over a month. Just pour the water out and let drain a bit then scrape the paint out onto your palette and you are good to go. Sure beats the heck out of trying to keep it in the freezer in a motor home!

IF I RECALL CORRECTLY MOST OF WHAT YOUR LEARNING NOW I DID BACK THEN.... wow, that is so encouraging

I JUMP ALL OVER THE PLACE IN WHAT MY SUBJECTS ARE..me too--you are normal (normal--just kidding) LOL

THE RIGHT BRAIN DRAWING - Anyone CAN draw! RtBrain teaches you - at will - to turn off the left brain that wants to controll and name everything, AND draw what it THINKS it sees or remembers AND completely not look at the subject to be drawn. The steps in the book teach you how to turn on your right brain which is the art side and DRAW EXACTLY WHAT IT SEES. People who CAN draw just do that naturally. However, the book teaches anyone how to learn how to do that. Practice....of eye hand coordination....just need practice. I know you are my friend and I am so glad that you "tutor" me and will be honest in what you see to help me get better. Mucho thanks! Ro

Just stopped by to see what you were up to. I am trying a graphite drawing of an elk, and finally have the 1st layer on everything so that now I must go back and adjust values to better suit me. Then there is the grass in the foreground. I hate foregrounds! I am giving this one to my nephew who also has the turkey. I thought I wanted to take a break from painting as I had been working fast and hard for about 3 in a row. I am now tired of drawing! Catch 22 I guess. he he I enjoyed your church sketches, and must admit I am envious at your ability to just "sketch". Well, as time allows give me a shout. You still have not given me any of your thoughts on my Sand Dune painting. I always look forward to your thoughts as they usually get me to THINKING. I appreciate your comments very much. Ro
