How long have you been drawing or painting?
I'm returning to art after a long lay off
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I was in banking for 30 years and at the age of 40 redecorated my kitchen and did some painting with house paints on the cupboard doors and on a frying pan for the wall and things just developed from there. I resigned in 1998 and opened a Bed and Breakfast hoping to be able to concentrate on art as well but boy was I wrong it has got so busy, but now 10 years down the line I have something missing in my life and it is my ability to express myself and I am passionate about getting back into painting and crafts

This was, my first ever, oil painting, done on board, it is the coloured version of the sketch pad rural scene where my Senior Housekeep live.

Hi Jill. Thanks for your kind comments. Sorry to hear about your son. Recovery can be slow from this, but you can recover.
You must be extremely busy running both businesses but don't run yourself into a breakdown.
I agree with David about selling your business.
Anyway good luck and best wishes. Keep in touch and let me know how things are going. You will be in my thoughts.
Warmest regards. Harry

Hi Jill. Yes it is a long time. Thanks for your kind comments on my pic. My arm is a lot better except overnight it stiffens and I have to exercise it a lot in the morning. (very painful). Still it will improve over the next few months hopefully.
Thanks for asking. Look forward to talking again soon. Warmest regards Harry

Thanks for your comments. Believe me it just the same over in ‘safe’ England, public parks are very dangerous places if you venture into them at the wrong time. We are lucky living in the countryside, but it still has it dangers. You must try and paint, anything – just paint. Baie baie dankie en het 'n Goeie dag…..David

Not thebest time to sell your business, still good luck. Just a thought – how about turning your business away from B & B and make it an art centre offering tuition with an arts and craft shop in the same building?

Hi Jill,
How are you? Thanks for your comments. First the cannon - I painted the background hill to provide a lift for the cannon, to give it more prominence. This I think it has done this successfully, although I was worried it was too bright. I’m still struggling to find my style with WC, so I’ll be painting more with controversial colours. Sydney Opera House is a great building and was something I had to paint. Luckily I have many photographs taken from my many vacations in Sydney, our hotel suite overlooked the opera house on our last visit so had plenty of time to study the building. Bye for now from a cold, windy and wet village…………David

Dear Jill, Thank you for your kind comments about my work. I wish to respond to your question concerning transparent watercolor. I already responded in a rather lengthy manner to the same question when Arne asked me. I think you were the first, however, and I will answer you on this forum, or you can read what I wrote to Arne, if you are able to find it. Just drop me a line and I will answer. I was impressed with your work as well! Very good stuff! I notice that you have several floral subjects. I love florals too. If you want to give transparent colors a try, you will find they impart a translucent quality which intensifies with repeated washes as long as the washes don't contain too much pigment.
try this when you have established your darkest shadows.
The Zebra subject is very impressive indeed!! Nicely done! Timothy

Hi Jill. Thanks for the comments. I will take some time to get used to painting with my left hand because I have great weakness in it because of my stroke.
I am persevering though because i am the eternal optimist. Warmest regards harry

Thanks for the comments. Used the same picture just imagined the rest, this is only my fourth watercolour so I’m still very much in the learning curve.
