I like the atmosphere here. Since pastels aren't my specialty, I won't comment on improvements. I think what everyone else has said makes sense. The one thing I do know is that pastels seem easy to lighten and darken so revisions should work. BTW....

Very, very, very good. I don't think you overdid the lines. Looks just like him to me. But the real treat is the fabric. You caught the expression very well.

Hi Paula, Fran is absolutely right, it takes a lot of practice! I agree not to toss the picture, when I wreck one I usually keep it (especially if I plan on giving it another go), I look at it and decide what I like about it and what I think I cou...

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My father was an artist and I learned technique from him when I was very small. I've always drawn but never had a lot of time for it when I was working and raising kids. I'm now retired. I have time for the things I like to do best, including portraits.

A FRIEND GAVE ME THESE LITTLE DANCING GIRLS AND I LOVE THEM. NO MATTER WHAT MUSIC IS PLAYING, THEY SEEM IN TIME WITH IT. THEY JUST HALF-TIME OR DOUBLE-TIME IT AND NEVER GET TIRED. WONDER WHAT KIND OF VITAMINS THEY TAKE. ;-)

INSTRUCTIONAL PORTRAIT WIP

Every now and then, I like to scan a portrait at different stages, for my own use. Sometimes it helps to be able to go back and see how I did a certain feature. I’ve had a few questions about how I do a portrait.

I guess you have to have a certain eye for this kind of work but I always hold that it’s more technical training and practice. I don’t trace a face or use a grid. I have my own method, which I learned from my father when I was very small. I can’t work without a ruler. Here are a few po… Continue

REFERENCE PHOTO

Hey everyone,

I've done my simple version of this old family photo. If anyone would like to use it for reference, you're welcome to it. It's always been one of my favorites.

TEXAS BLUEBONNETS

Hey Y'all,

I was out again yesterday, shooting Bluebonnets. My understanding is that they're not indigenous to this part of the country. They may have been brought here from the east coast of the U.S. or somewhere in Europe. But they're now the state flower of Texas and don't ever argue that point with a Texan. Again, if you'd like, these are free to use as reference.

NEW REFERENCE PHOTOS

Hey everyone,

Yesterday, my long-time friend, Roberta allowed me to wander around her yard with my camera. It's an azalea paradise right now. I have more but so far, I've edited these.

If anyone would like to use these for reference, feel free to use them.

WHAT THE HECK IS THIS THING?

Hey everyone,

I'm showing my ignorance here, so be kind, please.

Since this came from Pat O'Brien's, I assume it's for some beverage. Since I'm not much of a drinker, I'm not sure if it's a glass for a lazy brandy enthusiast or a pitcher for mixing and pouring something else. Since I'm not using it for either of these, everyone around here asks me why I want to know.....if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just curious. PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU KNOW!!!!!!!

Whatever it is, it's the neatest little gad… Continue

Hi Fran, Hope you have good weather thru to the end of the year. It's beautiful here in N.Jersey today, about 60 degrees and sunny, but we lost all our leaves last week. It was quite interesting reading your profile, my dad too was an artist, but not professionaly. He was a very exacting man, everything had to be just right. Tale Care. Carol

Fran, Many thanks for the comments, no, I should say the lovely complements on my works: View Across the Way for the 5*'s & being a favorite, Hibiscus, Afternoon Tea on the Lanai (this is a favorite of mine too, wish I could paint myself into the picture and come alive in it wouldn't that be a nice dream), A New Day and for making it a favorite and Meeting Uncle Al (Packa). It was so nice that you took your time to remark on these works, I really appreciate that. Your portraits especially, are so beautiful, and well drawn, I like to do the portraits as well, for some reason I work from a picture and find it so relaxing but I have to be in the mood to do portraits do you find that so?
I would like to have you as a friend. Take Care, Carol
