My favorite artist, Paul Klee, was inspired by a visit to Tunisia. Tunisia made him famous!

Is this an exact painting of light and dark areas? Or a rough idea to be made more precies...precise?...later on with the actual colors? I hope you don't mind me asking , its hard to find detailed explanations of how painters worked 300 years ago.

How do you do your prepainting...I know there is a term for it but I forgot it. Tonal painting maybe? Curious as to how you determine your lights and shadows, since that was very important in the Renaissance time. Most artists used greys, I think. Now siennas are adviced.
