Superb!!! The amount of detail and variety that you have managed in a 7" x 5", and that too with so much clarity, just shows what a good graphite artist you are.

Tell us a bit about yourself:
I am 63 years old and for the last 7 or 8 years I have tried to do at least one drawing (either graphite or ink) every day because I find it very relaxing. Of course, some of these are only 5-minute sketches :-)
I am currently trying out watercolours and I hope to share some of my attempts with you soon.

Thanks, Balaji, and a special thanks to your daughter...I was very concious o the dark water and wondered if I should lighten it a bit. Glad you said.

Balaji, the journal is a little addicting. I have been doing it for over a year now. Somedays when life just happens to get in the way , my journal is the only creative thing I get to do. Thank you for the encouraging words. Rita

To give you an idea of great line work check out "Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life", by George B. Bridgman, published by Sterling Publishing Co Inc, NY, NY, 2001 originally published in 1952, so you know the work in the book is good quality, not the contemporary junk you find these days...these sketches are "tried and true" and are used by good art schools teaching the good old fashioned way of drawing people. Your people sketches will look like Michelangelo's or DaVinci's, not like Joe Blow's who can barely hold a pencil the right way....yes, yes there is a right way to hold a pencil...something as simple as that is intrinsic to drawing. Before beginning the exercises in Bridgman's get another drawing book, "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson to learn the basics first. The Dewidecimal number at the library is 741.2 DOD. I think it was published in 2001.

You're going to be only as good as the instructor you learn from, so pick out the BEST books....not the most highest in price, but best drawing technique and instruction.
Follow the exercises in these bnooks and practice, practice, practice on anyhting, old phone books, old flyers, old paper bags, old newspapers etc on anything that will hold a pencil mark. Don't cheap out, buy the types of drawing pencils they recommend. If you cheap out you will never learn properly. Get good supplies so you learn "to draw" not learn how to "work around cheap supplies".

And good luck.

Hi Balaji
Thank you for taking the time to view my website. I am glad you enjoyed your visit there.

Drawing lessons usually start with learning a "vocabulary" of various marks your pencil, pen, felts, brush can make. You have a variety of weights (pressing firmer or lighter produces different values (lightness or darkness) in your line work. Twisting/turning lifting etc changing directions also make different marks. Once you get used to the full range of marks your supplies can produce the next step is playing with exercises to get a "fluency" in producing these marks. I suggest you get yourself to the closest public library and look up books on drawing.

I perhaps would not label this "contemporary". Rather, it harkens back to very old Japanese stylistic painting. Its beautiful, but .....
