Hi Gill,

This is a lovely painting, but I think it has a little 2d effect, you can't feel the depth easily. In my opinion it would be better if you use more bold colors at the foreground and more grayish blue versions at the background... and more details at the foreground, but less detail at the back. That creates the feeling of depth. And for the brush strokes, try to follow the lines of the field. If you use brush just up and down, it looks like everything flowing down. And it needs a little bit texture maybe. Did you try salt or flour or sponge to creat texture? It's fun!
Again, very lovely painting :) Very well done!

Hi Gill
Well the first think you did diferent is the size of the house. You have painted the house too big in proportion to the field.
Have a look:

and this would be more or less the rigth one:

HAve a look to the photo. I made some changes. I took some trees from the front away and add some to be background of the house. Nothing than more boring than to see in a field the trees in an simetrical way. THis gives some dinamich to it.
YOu have painted the shadows of the house in the rigth size, try to paint them just a litle bit longer and to add shadows to the plants around the house as well.

Maybe you could paint the frontside of the house one tone darker than the side where the sun is comming from and the fields of the background with a much ligther tone because if not hey are making the green field to small.

I hope this helps and know I am going to go back to my bed because my husband is protesting...

You did a good aproach, keep on, just some few changes na dyou have it!

Hi Doc,
Welcome to the Watercolors Group. Thank you for joining us and I hope that you are not going to have a mess with so many techniques. Watercolors is another story as acrilycs but to make a sketch for your pictures with it is probaly a good Idea.

I envy poeple who can already draw and know how to work with ink. THis alouds you to paint very nice sketch books on holidays.

Sorry to ask you like this but who is your sister-in-law?

Welcome again and enjoy ID&P forumand friends.

I just joined the group after some prodding from my sister-in-law. She is a great
water color artist and has been inspirational in my following up on my art after years of absent. I am an acrylic painter and airbrush person besides picking up my pen and inks again. Pen and Ink only allow just that. With pen and ink
I can add water colors and make the transition a bit easier. This is again on
directions of my sister-in-law. I believe she is right. Now its finding time with all my other art to fit in my schedule. What is good is that I can slip down to our public library, do my pen and inks. Return home do some water color washes and be able to get some strokes in with my acrylics. I need to get my one acrylic done in order to get it into the competition for the Wisconsin DNR
wildlife calendar contest. Most are submiting eagles which are plentiful here.
I chose a different subject so hopefully the judges will be eagle blind and note my submission. Doc Ferguson
