I am only just starting to learn to draw and I  would be interested to hear your views on whether using a grid to draw out your picture is considered cheating.  I have trouble placing things in the right place and find a grid helps although even then I don't get it quite right.  I always feel  that I have cheated when I've done that.  Incidentally, none of the work on my gallery has been done using a grid for that very reason.

Am I just being silly?

Apparently the Maaters used grids. So who are we to dispair?? Go for it!!

Outlines are fine.  Tis still your work!!

I have never used a grid, but I have used tracings to pin point specific parts of a portrait eg position of mouth, base of nose, eyes etc. I am very poor at outline drawing and need as much help as I can get. If I had a projector I would use that as well to make big enlargements, but they are a bit expensive. I'm certainly not going to stop drawing just because I can't work totally freehand.

I always used to use a grid when doing my pet portraits, but now I use a projector, but I do find now that I add less and less detail to the line drawing, perhaps it because Ive become a better artist over the years and I dont need such a detailed drawing to work from...  but no I dont see it as cheating

I'm with Jennifer - I now use the barest outline in my projection stage . . . just to get a few basic placements.  I know this one artist whose paintings go for thousands of dollars - and he always wins 1st place in shows . . . he projects in great detail and spends hours tracing the projection.

Using a grid is not cheating. alot of times it helps you to learn. Then there will come a time, that you will not need to use one.

Enjoy

"I just finished my Yorkie. She sure is a cute little critter. I didn't have the right colors (or wasn't successful in blending them), but I do like her anyway. It's done in Derwent Colorsoft pencil on 9 x 12" drawing pad paper. "
