I am new to oils and wanted to ask other oil painters how they discard the waste created by oil paint. namly the residue left from cleaning brushes. so far i have been storing in glass jars. i dont want to throw them in the trash. what do you guys do?

After you save enough to make a load you can wash them for the re-use. If you use spirits with the rags they make nice charcoal starters for the grill.

thanks for replying Tom, but what i was mainly asking about is the residue left from the paint that collects in the bottom of the cleaning bucket. i use mineral spirits and reuse what i can of that, but the oil pigments build up into a thick mess. how do you discard that?

I use two ways

- I store it in a jar with a cover and then go to waste disposal

- Sometime I use the residue as a primer layer - when I want a grey-green underlayer to give a sad/cool atmosphere.

In my town, you take stuff like this to the recycling center.
