hello artists:)
i have been working with fairly cheap brushes(and yes.. sorry to say, they are dollar store quality)but have been doing the job so far,as i get better skills and practice. even though their cheapo's i always store them bristle side up, as to not ruin them and make them un-usuable alltogether
i am now getting to a point in my artwork, that i could probably GREATLY benefit at investing in artist quality brushes
1).is there different storage, care and protective things i should be doing with them, then i would with the student grade ones?
2)do you use those protective sleeve things on all your brushes?
etc.
any tips on the topic of brushes in greatly appreciated!

Permalink Reply by Howard Cowdrick on February 8, 2012 at 8:58am Brushes stored bristle/hairs up is not ideal, especially if they are wet. One thing I do is store wet brushes bristle down, but, not in a container. I hang them over the edge of a table with spring clip clothespins. When dry I store them laying on their sides.
I have brushes that are well over 20 years old and still in good condition and usable.
Last summer I left a brush in cleaning water and was gone for several months. By the time I got back the acrylic had hardened in the brush. I thought all was lost. Much to my surprise and delight. Winsor Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer saved that brush.

These are two great ideas. I store mine in a empty coffee can with a rock in the bottom. I ALWAYS supper clean my brushes and I also condition the natural hair ones. Mine are also over twenty years old. Started out with the cheapos then saved up to buy the good ones on sale. Never pay full price. CJ
