Permalink Reply by Steven Ponsford on February 20, 2012 at 7:04pm It's a lovely scene well painted, but it looks like a dull cloudy day, you have painted over the whole page.
If you leave white unpainted areas for the highlights your painting will spring to life.
If you want to add sparkles to the water you could carefully scrape of the paint with a scapel or sharp craft knife.
I often use a candle wax on small areas of the water before applying your washes.
Permalink Reply by Suzanne Parnell on February 20, 2012 at 7:58pm Thanks Steve. Yes I think you are right about the white bits and I am consciously trying to do that a bit more now. Thanks for the tips anyway. I have tried the candle wax on another painting (with the sea) and it worked ok. Not tried the scraping off though...sounds a bit scary yet!

Permalink Reply by Suzanne Parnell on February 20, 2012 at 8:00pm Thanks Tony...the jetty took quite a long time to be honest with the various shadows and I worked over the boats a few times

Permalink Reply by Dreamkeeper on April 11, 2012 at 12:49am I so wish I could paint like you - wonderful . Even though I can't go in or on water that is deeper than my knees(I lost my husband to the Pacific Ocean) - I'd love to spend the afternoon on the bank with a sketch book ect .
Permalink Reply by Nina Cringan on April 11, 2012 at 6:18pm I think you did a nice job. The only thing I would say is I would add some shadows under the boats. To seperate them from the water. Also some shadows along the bank of trees. But still Very Well Done.
very nicely done. my only comment is that if you darken the value of the near boats and dock and let it lighten as you go further back you will add much more depth to your painting. it is the contrasts between light and dark, old and new, etc that make the painting.
the values for the near boat in steve's picture would be a good starting point.
