sometimes it's difficult to judge values in color or even in black and white. i've found a little trick that i use in my classes. you take a piece of dark blue or red cellophane paper and you tape it to the back of an 11 x 14 mat as if you are matting a watercolor painting (but this can be used for any medium). when you look at your painting through this paper, it converts all the values into lights and darks. you can then see your different values to see where your painting needs darker color. this even works on graphite drawings.

Thank you so much Kay… I am dyslexic on the high side, and it can cause problem with seeing. I had heard that different colors will trick the mind to seeing thing differently so I am going to try it. You are a blessing.

This is a great tool that I have been using for over 30 years in my quilting projects. When I started learning watercolour painting a few months ago I remembered my value finder and have been using it in my painting since the beginning of my journey. It really does work, so everyone, please give it a try!

Hi Marcia.........good idea. I made my own on a sheet of clear Mylar. I painted it half red and half blue, using watercolors - Alizarin Crimson and Prussian Blue. Other shades of red and blue might work equally well or better.
Thanks for bringing the subject up.........values are so important.

Hi Kay,
I read this post yesterday night and just happen to come across some red cellophane paper today while shopping at the Dollar store ,so I bought it. When I got home to make my tool- I found the paper to be thin, and light red instead of a deep dark red. Will this work for this purpose or should I go out and buy something thicker and darker?

Thanks for sharing this great tip! Linda

hi linda, i'm pretty sure this paper will work for you. open it up and put it on top of a painting where it should make your values appear. then you can tape it to a matboard to make it convenient to handle all the time...regards, kay
