Hello, I have kind of a problem i need answered. When I see some paintings on canvas's they seem to look shiny and feel different from mine, is there some kind of finisher or something you are supposed to put on a painting after it is dried? If so, is it bad if you dont put it on? Also I bought this stuff called Mod Podge for a calloage project, does anyone know if that will work on paintings as a gloss and protective coat?
please help, thank you!

Hi Connerb,i dont work in oil, although i think you do, the best thing to do is go direct to Dawn, sketchart, any of those who work in oil, they will put you right, best of luck.

Hi,

acrylics usually don't need extra coating/finishing. Maybe there is a difference in the quality of the paints. Do you use students or artist quality?
I've never heard of Mod Podge, so can't help you there, sorry.

Hi ConnerB
If you use a varnish to spray over your finished acrylic, it will give you the shiney effect you're after.
This was dicussed in the following forum in great detail.

WHEN TO SPRAY GLAZE OVER FINISHED PAINTING

Hope it helps. Don't know about collages, I'm afraid

hi Connor,
just wanted to say that the other comments are all right and you can leave them unvarnished if you like. but also that you dont have to use a spray varnish, its quicker to use a spray but more economical to use wet bottle varnish. varnish also comes in different types, gloss, matt silk and satin to name a few, so best to do some research. mod podge as far as i know is a type of pva glue with an added chemical so it should work as a gloss coating, but make sure you do a small test just to make sure.

Gosh, I remember using Mod Podge as a kid. It definitely was a product of the 60s.

As for using it as a coating, I wouldn't trust it to be acid-free and non-yellowing. It's basically just Elmer's glue under a different name.
